Understanding when to repair or replace your cooling system can be challenging. This guide will explore the signs that it’s time to consider an AC upgrade.

          1. Inadequate Cooling Performance

As temperatures rise, the reliability of your air conditioning (AC) unit is crucial for home comfort. However, understanding when to repair or replace your cooling system can be challenging since you don’t want to discard a potentially functional unit, but you also don’t want to spend more than needed on costly repairs.

This guide will explore the signs indicating it’s time to consider a complete AC upgrade.

          AC unit

struggles to maintain a comfortable temperature or fails to cool some areas of your home, it might be a sign of its diminishing efficiency. Older units often cannot keep up with the demands of modern living, leading to uneven cooling and discomfort during hot days.

          2. Frequent Repairs and Breakdowns

repairs

can be both frustrating and costly. If your AC unit demands constant attention and repairs, investing in a new, more reliable system might be more economical in the long run.

          3. Age of the Unit: Over 15 Years

The age of your AC unit is a significant factor. Most systems have a lifespan of around 15 years. If your unit is nearing or has surpassed this age, its efficiency is likely compromised. Upgrading to a newer model not only enhances performance but also offers advanced features and improved energy efficiency.

          4. Rising Energy Bills

A noticeable increase in your energy bills, despite no significant change in usage patterns, can indicate that your AC unit is losing its efficiency. Newer, energy-efficient models can help reduce your energy consumption and costs.

          5. R-22 Refrigerant Use

If your current AC unit uses R-22 refrigerant (Freon), which is being phased out due to its environmental impact, replacement becomes essential. New AC systems use more environmentally friendly refrigerants, aligning with current regulations and sustainability efforts.

As you welcome spring, don’t overlook the HVAC appliances that got you through the winter. Now is the time to make sure you’re prepared for the seasons ahead.

          Test Your AC Early

It feels like spring is finally beginning in Kingston, Trenton, and Belleville, and not a moment too soon! Just a few weeks ago, much of Ontario was still covered with metre-high snowbanks. The arrival of warmer weather, not to mention increased hours of sunlight, has many of us refocusing on the outdoors: getting back into regular walk routines, setting up our patio furniture, and firing up that BBQ!

While you’re welcoming the new season, don’t overlook the mechanical appliances that got you through the winter. Now is the perfect time to show them some love, and make sure you’re prepared for the seasons ahead!

You likely won’t need it yet, but making sure your AC ready to go for the summer is always a smart move.

Air source heat pumps are an efficient, eco-friendly way to heat and cool your home, discover why they’re a smart choice for Canadians.

What are air source heat pumps, and how do they work?

Are you looking for a smart way to heat and cool your home? Air source heat pumps (ASHPs) might be just what you need. Not only do they offer a more sustainable way to manage your home’s temperature, but they also come with a host of benefits that could save you money and improve your comfort. Let’s dive in and see how these systems work and what makes them a great choice fo homeowners in Trenton, Kingston, Belleville, Napanee and the surrounding areas.

are clever devices that move heat from outside to inside your home to warm it up and can reverse the process to cool your home in the summer. They’re incredibly efficient because they transfer heat rather than generate it, using little electricity and zero fossil fuels. This, in turn, dramatically reduces your carbon footprint.

Imagine getting efficient heating and cooling all year round, all from the same system. That’s the beauty of ASHPs.

It uses the ASHP as the primary heat source and only switches to the furnace on extremely cold days when the ASHP might not be sufficient. This can lead to significant savings on your energy bills, making hybrid systems an attractive option for many Canadian households.

Installing an ASHP in your home can offer several long-term benefits, including lower energy bills due to its efficiency, reduced carbon emissions for a greener lifestyle, and year-round comfort with consistent heating and cooling (i.e. you only need one device for summer, winter and everything in between). In addition, ASHPs have a long lifespan and can provide reliable performance for years, making them a smart investment for the future.

When compared to other renewable heating solutions, ASHPs stand out for their versatility, efficiency, and lower installation costs. They are simpler and less expensive to install than geothermal systems (also known as Ground Source Heat Pumps or GSHPs), and don’t require the extensive area needed to support the GSHP’s loop, or the space that solar panels demand. Plus, with advancements in compressor technology, ASHPs are becoming increasingly efficient and effective – even in colder climates – making them a viable option across Ontario.

The cost of a heat pump in Ontario can vary depending on the type, size, and specific installation requirements of your home. Generally, air source heat pump installation costs range from $3,000 to $15,000, influenced by system type, home size, and specifics. Ductless systems typically start around $3,000, while ducted systems may vary depending on whether you have existing HVAC ducts and how large your space is.

As we step into 2026, the conversation around home heating is evolving, with a significant focus on efficiency and sustainability. A standout solution that has garnered attention is the hybrid heating system. But what exactly is it, and more importantly, can it save you money? Let’s dive in.

          Understanding Hybrid Heating Systems

A hybrid heating system merges the efficiency of an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) with the reliability of your traditional furnace. The system primarily relies on the ASHP for heating, switching to the furnace on those bitterly cold days when the ASHP might not suffice. This smart switching ensures optimal energy use, adapting to varying weather conditions to maintain comfort while conserving energy.

          The Promise of Savings

One of the most compelling reasons to consider a hybrid system is the potential for significant savings on energy bills. By optimizing the use of the heat pump during milder conditions and reserving the furnace for extreme cold, hybrid systems can reduce overall energy consumption. This efficiency translates into lower monthly costs, with some estimates suggesting savings of up to 50% annually on heating.

          Comfort and Consistency

Beyond savings, comfort is a key benefit. Hybrid systems provide consistent heating, eliminating the fluctuations in temperature that can occur with single-source systems. Whether it’s a mild fall day or the deep freeze of a Canadian winter, your home remains a cozy retreat.

          Environmental Impact

Choosing a hybrid system aligns with a growing desire for more sustainable living. By reducing dependency on fossil fuels and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions, hybrid heating systems offer a more eco-friendly alternative to traditional heating methods.

To make the switch even more appealing, many rebate and incentive programs may be available for homeowners in Kingston, Belleville, Trenton and the surrounding areas. You could be eligible for rebates, grants, or financing options that help offset the cost of upgrading your heating system. Get in touch with our team to learn what incentives may be available to you.

When winter settles in across Ontario, there’s nothing like the steady warmth of a gas fireplace to keep you comfortable. But if you want the most out of this appliance, you’ll need to commit to seasonal maintenance. While gas fireplaces burn cleaner and require far less upkeep than wood-burning units, they’re still mechanical systems that require regular servicing to stay safe and reliable.

, dust, dirt, pet hair, and even insects can accumulate over time and begin to clog the burner ports and orifices. When that happens, the fireplace can’t burn fuel properly, leading to poor combustion and visible soot.

Unlike wood-burning fireplaces (where soot is expected), any soot on the glass or inside the firebox of a gas unit is a warning sign. It can indicate deteriorating ceramic logs, blocked burner passages, or incomplete combustion, all of which affect performance and safety. If you notice the glass darkening or a buildup forming, it’s time to schedule service right away.

Examples of critical parts that need inspection and cleaning include:

Valves and gas connections (to avoid potential leaks)

           Thermocouple and thermopile

           Ignition and pilot assembly

           Fan and controls

When these parts begin to fail or fall out of adjustment, the result can be anything from hard starts and weak flames to poor performance, or, in rare cases, safety risks such as fire or gas ignition issues. A WeCare Maintenance Plan catches small problems early, long before they lead to costly repairs while ensuring the safety of you and your loved ones.

#3 – Venting and chimney issues

Blocked or restricted venting is another common issue, often caused by animals and nests (like birds, squirrels, raccoons, or bats) finding their way into chimney flues or exterior vents. When nest materials build up, or an animal becomes trapped, odours and ventilation problems quickly follow.

High-efficiency gas fireplaces can also contribute to venting concerns, as they pull more heat into the home and leave cooler flues behind. That cooler air increases condensation, and when moisture mixes with combustion gases, it can create a corrosive environment that damages liners, mortar, and surrounding brickwork. Staying ahead of venting issues with annual inspections helps protect both your fireplace and the structure around it.

What’s included in a Gas Fireplace WeCare Maintenance Plan

A professional gas fireplace maintenance visit covers far more than a quick cleaning — it’s a full 22 point inspection to ensure every part of the system is operating safely and efficiently. Core service tasks include:

Complete inspection of all system components

Check and adjust the pilot light

Clean and, if needed, reposition or replace ceramic logs

Inspect thermopile, thermocouple, fan, venting, and thermostat

Confirm safe gas pressures and leak-free connections

Because many issues start small and out of sight, a trained technician can catch problems a homeowner wouldn’t typically notice.

When to Schedule Gas Fireplace Maintenance

Gas fireplaces should be serviced once per year, ideally before the heating season begins, to ensure they’re ready for steady use. You should also book a service any time you notice these warning signs:

Preparing Your Home for Winter: Essential Heating and Indoor Air Quality Tips

It is essential to prepare your home for winter to ensure you stay warm and comfortable this season. Find our tips and how we can help in this blog post.

Across Ontario, the sun is rising a little later and setting a little earlier. Fall weather will fade and be replaced by the softer winter season. It’s the perfect time to be proactive by ensuring your home’s heating system is ready to go for the chillier weather ahead.

As surely as the first snow prompts a flood of calls to local mechanics and tire shops, the first frosty evening signals the heating season for most of us…and a very, very busy few days at heating servicers across the province. The phones don’t stop ringing with requests for urgent repairs and tune-up appointments alike. To avoid the delays caused by this seasonal spike, book your annual tune-up now with a Dows ClimateCare professional! If you’re not maintaining your mechanical appliances yearly, at least turn on your furnace or heat pump (in heating mode) early, just briefly to test it. If there’s any issue, be sure to call right away and make sure you’re at the front of the line!

WHY SHOULD I MAINTAIN MY FURNACE OR HEAT PUMP?

Heating systems are mechanical appliances. They’ve got motors, belts, bearings, and electronic components – just like your car. And like today’s vehicles, many still use gas, while some are fully electric. Yet, despite these similarities, many people don’t treat them equally. It’s an irony the heating and cooling industry has been working to combat for decades. If most people treated their cars the way they neglect their home’s mechanical appliances, the tow truck industry would be a lot busier! And while everyone seems to know to keep fuel in their car, change its oil, and seek advice when something doesn’t sound or feel right – many of these same people won’t call their heating contractor until the furnace won’t start and the house is cooling down quickly. To avoid getting stuck, have a licensed professional maintain your home comfort systems every year.

          WHO SHOULD DO THE MAINTENANCE?

If you’re using gas, they’ll need a gas licence from the TSSA. If your home is heated with a heat pump, make sure your contractor has a 313D Residential Air Conditioning Systems Mechanics licence and is qualified to work on this type of equipment. If you’d like to ensure your systems run at peak e ciency, last longer, and are less likely to fail your family by breaking down, yearly maintenance is key. Whether your system is tuned-up before the big season, or just after it’s over, the benefits are the same. There’s no need to call when it’s busy! And you don’t need to pay full price for a professional to visit, either.

We also know that with the cooler weather arriving, and the children in schools and daycares means germs will spread at peak rates. Many of us don’t prepare for cold and flu season proactively; we hope we don’t get afflicted, but if our throat gets scratchy or our sinuses feel pressured, we reach for a warm drink, a little extra rest, and often a quick trip to the pharmacy. While a healthy diet will always be critical to your health, you might be surprised to learn that your home comfort system plays a big role in it, too!

Most of the air we breathe is indoor air. The EPA has suggested that indoor air can be 25 to 100X denser in pollution than outdoor air. We also know that poor indoor air quality can lead to a bevy of health problems, including chronic respiratory diseases. It can also be less worrisome, but it still has unwanted symptoms like headaches, dry eyes, nasal congestion, nausea, and fatigue. It’s a key way to spread germs like the cold and flu viruses. Luckily, your home comfort system can help protect you! Here are a few ways to stay ahead of the curve of seasonal sickness this year.

with an air handler, the filter placed beside that unit is your first line of defence against airborne particles. In many cases, it’s also your only defence, so it’s critical that it’s working well. Several different quality filters are available, each with a Minimum Effciency Rating Value or MERV rating. The higher the value, the better the filter. Dows ClimateCare recommends using a MERV 11 or higher rating filter, which should filter out about 95% of particulates like lint, pollen, dust mites, mould spores, pet dander and smoke. Moving to a MERV 13 rated filter filtration should increase closer to 98%. It’s worth noting, too, that not all filters are built equally. The “1-inch” thick filters you buy from the hardware store aren’t optimal and should be inspected at least monthly, more frequently if you’re doing renovations around the home or have pets that shed hair.

PRO TIP: Ask Dows ClimateCare about media cabinets that support 5” filters that only need to be changed once or twice, a year and can often easily be retrofitted into your existing furnace or air handler’s ductwork.

If your home was constructed in the last 20-30 years, there’s a very good chance that it has an air exchanger system. The most common is a Heat Recovery Ventilator or HRV. This unit has a motor and a small, usually round, duct system that lives in your mechanical room. It brings fresh, outdoor air into your system, and during the winter, it works to retain the heat from the stale indoor air it expels and exchanges. If you’d like to retain humidity too, you should look at a similar system known as an Energy Recovery Ventilator or ERV. If you have an older home that doesn’t include such a system, worry not – a Dows ClimateCare professional can do a retrofit installation with ease.

          3. HUMIDIFIER

Modern homes have very tight building envelopes; they’re well-sealed and avoid a lot of the ineffciency and discomfort associated with older, drafty buildings. One challenge this creates is the lack of consistency in humidity between the seasons. When you’re heating in the winter, and bringing in cold, dry air from the outdoors through the HRV, your home’s humidity can dip. Most experts agree that about 30-40% relative humidity is ideal for indoor environments during the winter months. If you’re seeing numbers below this range in your home, or see symptoms like dry, itchy skin, or nose bleeds in extreme cases, be sure to ask your heating professional about installing a whole-home humidifier. It’s probably a lot less expensive than you’d expect and can have a huge impact on your well-being and health if you’re breathing overly dry air!

PRO TIP: A central humidifier also has a “filter” or pad, like your furnace, that needs to be changed. Generally, once a year is fine; be sure to set a note in your calendar as a reminder to change it.

          4. UV-C

Whether you’ve got a basic furnace filter or a full HEPA system, these systems are designed to remove particulates from the air you breathe. For people who want to go a step further, we recommend UV-C lights. UV-C effectively controls mould and bacteria growth on your air conditioner’s indoor coil – a surface that normally has the two things mould likes most – darkness and moisture. Surface treatment with UV-C light is a proven way to keep your air conditioner’s indoor coil clean.

PRO TIP: Keep your paint cans and other chemicals away from your mechanical room! Far too often we see these items kept right beside the furnace. Paints and other chemicals contain volatile organic compounds. These VOCs can be dangerous to your health. Please store them somewhere else that’s not so close to the lungs of your home’s air circulation system!

PROTECT YOUR COMFORT AND HEALTH THIS WINTER

Getting your home ready for winter is simple with the right proactive steps. From checking your furnace to improving indoor air quality with filters, humidifiers, and UV-C technology, a few small actions now can lead to big benefits in comfort and health when colder weather arrives. If you’re not yet enrolled in a maintenance plan, consider joining Dows ClimateCare’s WeCARE program for reliable service, savings, and peace of mind all season long.

          Heat Pumps Explained

Over the last several years in particular, a lot of Canadians have been exposed to the term “heat pump” – often for the first time. This is largely thanks to their rising popularity that’s been fueled by government-funded rebate programs. So, what is this “new” technology, and why should anyone pay attention to it? More to the point: why are we talking about heat pumps in the middle of the summer?!

The first thing to understand is that nearly all

          heat pumps

are dual purpose; they both heat and cool your home. It’s a bit of a misnomer in English, but if you were to directly translate the term from French, a thermal pump is a better description. And here’s an idea that’s really going to blow your mind; if you have a central air conditioner, you already have a heat pump!

          air conditioner

is really just a heat pump in a “cooling only” configuration. It works very much the same way a heat pump does, except that it doesn’t have a reversing valve to switch from cooling to heating mode. This might be one of the largest marketing failures of the heat pump industry. Canadian building and HVAC expert Gord Cooke actually calls them “dual purpose air conditioners”.

Why Heat Pumps Are Worth It

So, now that you know you’ve been trusting a heat pump to cool and dehumidify your home for decades, you shouldn’t be apprehensive about trusting that same process to heat your home in the winter. It also comes with some great bonuses:

          1. It’s more efficient

Because heat pumps don’t generate heat – they simply transfer it from outdoors to indoors – they use much less power than direct heating appliances like

          furnaces

. This can save you big money on your heating bill!

          2. It’s greener

Heat pumps use clean electricity, and don’t burn any fossil fuels, so there’s no carbon footprint associated with using them. They help us commit to a greener, more environmentally-friendly way of heating our homes.

          3. It’s tried and true

There’s a lot of misinformation out there that heat pumps are new. In fact, they first trace back to thermal transfer devices devised in the mid 1850s. The recent surge in popularity can be attributed to advances in compressor technology that’s driven increases in efficiency.

          4. But it’s too cold here for a heat pump

This common argument just doesn’t make sense. Nearly all heat pumps sold and installed in Ontario are cold climate rated, capable of extracting and transferring heat from the coldest outdoor conditions.

          5. But I like my gas furnace

And you’re welcome to keep it as a backup for days when you want the heat to be near-instant. Pairing a heat pump with a gas furnace, known as a hybrid system, is one of the most common installation configurations! Since the entire system is controlled by the thermostat, you as the homeowner get to choose how you use the heat pump. You can use it as an air conditioner for cooling only, let it do the majority of the heating to favour efficiency, or have the furnace kick in earlier to ensure the temperature you want remains constant. You’re in complete control of the system!

          6. It’s quieter

Heat pumps also often have quieter operation in cooling mode than most air conditioners, usually around 55 decibels. This means less noise near your outdoor living spaces, and even quieter operation when inside your home.

          7. It fits tight spaces

Worried about space? Side discharge heat pumps have smaller footprints than traditional air conditioners, which makes them a great fit for tight spaces – especially if that’s in a close-fitting space between neighbours.

is something you’ll want to understand. In Canada, conventional tank-style water heaters generally last about a decade (sometimes longer with great water quality and maintenance), while modern tankless models can reach two decades or more with proper care.

This post explains how and why lifespans differ, the wear-and-tear patterns to watch, what maintenance really adds to service life, how insurance and warranties factor in, and how to choose between tank and tankless for your household’s needs.

What Appliance “Life Expectancy” Really Means

A manufacturer’s warranty is not the same as expected service life. Warranties (often 6–12 years for tanks; longer heat-exchanger warranties for many tankless models) indicate how long the maker will stand behind key components. It’s not a promise of

Tank Water Heaters: Corrosion And Sediment Are The Enemies

. Over time, that rod depletes. Once it’s spent, corrosion accelerates inside the tank. Add sediment buildup from hard water, and you get hotter spots, noise (popping/rumbling), and stress on the glass lining, which eventually leads to leaks. Proactive anode checks and periodic tank flushing slow this arc.

With no storage tank to rust through, the main wear item is the heat exchanger. Hard water scale insulates heat transfer surfaces, forces higher burner or element output, and can trigger error codes. Annual (sometimes biannual)

Tank warranties are commonly 6–12 years on the tank/parts; tankless often carry long heat-exchanger warranties with shorter terms on parts/labour. A longer warranty usually reflects better materials or anode strategy—but water quality and maintenance still rule real-world lifespan. Dows ClimateCare can walk you through terms across brands so expectations match your home’s conditions.

Tanks can leak and cause water damage at end-of-life; insurers often enforce replacement age limits. Tankless failures are more likely to be no-heat events rather than damaging floods.
