Is it OK to skip my furnace maintenance?

fixing a heat pumpSome homeowners across Ontario don’t think long about the consequences of skipping furnace maintenance from a qualified ClimateCare technician. The furnace will be fine for another year. It might be fine, unless it’s not. Problems develop for all kinds of reasons.

In the immortal words of the Narrator in Fight Club, “On a long enough timeline, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero.”  The same goes for your furnace, and regular maintenance is about as close as you can get to restarting the timeline completely.

These are three of the most damaging and dangerous consequences of not booking an annual service visit from your local ClimateCare member.

Poison in your air.

One of the most extreme consequences of skipping annual maintenance is the risk for carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide poisoning is completely preventable, but more than a thousand people die every year from it.

It is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas that is present when fuel burns in places like your gas furnace or fireplace.

Not toxic, but not good either.

Skipping furnace maintenance (and the equipment inspection that comes with actual maintenance tasks) leaves debris to build up throughout the HVAC system.

It doesn’t take long for the filter to become clogged with dust, dirt and debris, reducing airflow, air quality and making your system work harder than it should.

Once your air filter is no longer capable of keeping allergens and particles out, the furnace itself, along with the air ducts and registers, become coated with nasty airborne particles. And if they’re in the ducts, they’re in your lungs.

Do you like being comfortable at home?

Annual maintenance helps your furnace maintain consistent airflow and heat distribution throughout the house.

home air quality and furnace repairEvery time you skip a maintenance cycle, the cold spots in your home become more noticeable. Cold spots signal stagnant air, and stagnant air can lead to mould behind the paint or wallpaper on your walls and cracking of perishable materials like caulk around windows.

To combat this, you’ll crank up the thermostat. Your bills will snowball and drain the bank account faster than you expect.

These are just three of the long list of reasons to book your local ClimateCare member for a furnace maintenance (or as we like to call it – a precision tune-up) visit today.
